The history of New York pizza

The history of New York pizza

1905: Gennaro Lombardi, who had immigrated to the US from Naples, Italy, applies to the New York City government for the first license to make and sell pizza in this country, at his grocery store on Spring Street in what was then a thriving Italian-American neighborhood.Lombardi's, on Spring Street in New York City, is granted the nation's first license to sell pizza.
1924: Anthony (Totonno) Pero leaves Lombardi's and opens Totonno's in Coney Island, New York.
1929: John Sasso leaves Lombardi's to open John's Pizza in Greenwich Village.
1933: Pasquale "Patsy" Lancieri founded the East Harlem coal-fired joint in 1933, after having learned the ropes at Lombardi's.
1990: Patsy Grimaldi, his nephew, opens Patsy's in Brooklyn
1991: Lancieri's widow sells Patsy's to Frank Brija and John Brecevich Brija and John Brecevich
1994: Brecevich and Brija license name "Patsy's," and Patsy's franchises begin to open in Manhattan
1996: After legal battles over the name Patsy's. Patsy Grimaldi renames his two pizzerias "Grimaldi's"
2001: Grimaldi sells Brooklyn store and the name "Grimaldi" to Frank Ciolli

THIS ARE THE BEST PIZZARIA IN NEW YORK CITY.
For once in your life abstain from Dominos, Pizza Hut and Papa Johns while in NYC

# Artichoke Basille's Pizza & Brewery
Only in New York would people wait in line for an hour on a sweltering summer day for a slice of pizza. Artichoke opened to rave reviews in early 2008 and pizza lovers throughout the city have been flocking there ever since. They serve three varieties, all which are equally delicious: a square Sicilian slice ($3.50), a classic Neapolitan slice ($3.50) and an artichoke-spinach slice ($4.00).

Although the prices are high, the slices are also huge. There's no guaranteed way to avoid the lines, but we suggest swinging by around 5:00 p.m. for an early dinner or on your way home from the bars when the crowds die down after midnight.

With no place to sit, your best bet is to find a nearby stoop where you can linger and enjoy one of the most welcomed new additions to the city's pizza scene.

Location: 328 East 14th Street (between 1st Avenue & 2nd Avenue)

# Lombardi’s
This Nolita joint, which opened in 1905, claims to be "America's First Pizzeria." After closing its doors for a decade, Lombardi's reopened in 1994 to the same fanfare that helped earn it legendary status among the city’s pizza places.

Out-of-towners can often be seen mingling with locals on the corner of Spring Street and Mott Street, as they wait for a table and the opportunity to taste one of the city's most delicious pies. Skip the small 14-inch pie for $15.50 and order a large 18-inch pie for $19.50. It comes with tomatoes, mozzarella and basil; additional toppings start at $3. Although the prices are probably a bit higher than when Lombardi's first opened, you can be sure that the pizza is just as tasty.

Location: 32 Spring Street (between Mott Street & Mulberry Street)

# Nick’s Pizza
While many New Yorkers venture to the outer boroughs in search of the city’s best pizza, they can save a trip out to Queens now that the famous Nick’s Pizza has a location on the Upper East Side. Their pizzas (a small is $13.00 and a large is $15.00) are uniformly excellent – a crispy crust, gooey mozzarella cheese, tangy marinara sauce, and a touch of fresh basil that completes their mouth watering pies.

You can choose from a dozen toppings, which will cost you an extra $2.00 each. But Nick’s is about more than just pizza. Start your meal with their watercress and arugula salad with roasted peppers, sundried tomato and honey mustard vinaigrette. Finish it off with one of their renowned cannolis.

Location: 1814 2nd Ave (between 93rd Street & 94th Street)

# Una Pizza Napoletana
Although some New Yorkers have called Una Pizza Napoletana their favorite pizza place in the world, others have been turned off by the high prices and limited selection. At $21.95 for a 12-inch personal pizza, it’s hard to feel like you’re not getting ripped off. But despite the fact that a party of four people can easily run up a bill of more than $100, there is generally a long wait for a table at this East Village restaurant, which seats about 30 people.

The bianca pizza (buffalo mozzarella, olive oil, garlic, basil, and sea salt) is our favorite, but no trip here is complete without trying their other three pies: marinara, margherita, and filetti. They’re only open Thursday - Sunday evenings from 5 p.m. until they run out of fresh dough. We suggest getting there early to avoid the lines and ensure they still have ingredients in stock!

Location: 349 East 12th Street (between 1st Avenue & 2nd Avenue)

# Patsy’s Pizzeria
Although Patsy’s has seven Manhattan locations, making it one of the city’s most convenient places to grab some tasty pizza, we suggest heading up to East Harlem and checking out the original restaurant. Open since 1933, its $1.75 slices and $11.00 pies are among the best deals in the city.

Cooked in a coal oven, Patsy's super thin pizza crusts create a chewy base for their signature pies. The remaining six locations feature equally tasty (yet more expensive) pizza and the same friendly service that makes this city staple one of New York’s most enjoyable places to dine.

Locations:

* 2287 1st Avenue (East Harlem)

* 67 University Place (Greenwich Village)

* 509 3rd Avenue (Murray Hill)

* 1312 2nd Avenue (Upper East Side)

* 61 West 74th Street (West Side)

* 318 West 23rd Street (Chelsea)

* 200 East 60th Street (East Side)

Should old acquaintance be forgot,
and never brought to mind?
Should old acquaintance be forgot,
and auld lang syne?
CHORUS:
For auld lang syne, my dear,
for auld lang syne,
we'll take a cup o' kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.

And don't forget your midnight kiss! *

World Cup 2010: Paul the psychic octopus who became one of the stars of the World Cup after correctly predicting results of games

It's Spain! Oracle Paul the Psychic Octopus predicts Spain will beat Holland and win the World Cup. The world-famous octopus could be seen sitting on a tank marked with a Spanish flag for only a few minutes before grabbing out a mussel and devouring it, while completely ignoring the Dutch tank indicating a Spanish victory in Sunday's final match in the World Cup. Paul correctly predicted Germany's wins over Argentina, England, Australia and Ghana and the country's loss to Spain and Serbia.

Paul the psychic octopus 'could transfer to Spain' after bidding war

By Andrew Hough

Madrid zoo announced a transfer bid for the oracle octopus, which became a worldwide sensation after correctly predicted the outcome of as many World Cup matches as he has legs.

The invertebrate is due to retire after predicating all of Germany's World Cup. He finished his career by calling Spain’s final 1-0 win over Holland in the final at the weekend.

The one blemish on its record was when he wrongly predicted Germany would beat Spain in the Euro 2008 final.

In what may prove to be this year’s biggest transfer story, negotiations have began for the world's most famous cephalopod to head to Spain, still giddy from its win.

Officials from Zoo Aquarium in Madrid told Paul’s aquarium in Germany it would trump all others and give him a warm welcome in gratitude for predicting Spain's World Cup win.

They believe the eight legged creature, named after a German children's book by Boy Lornsen, will attract thousands of visitors and become a star attraction.

Madrid zoo contacted the Sea Life aquarium in Oberhausen "to ask them to transfer the animal" while making, what they said, was an offer to the Germans they could not refuse.

Officials promised to “improve on any offer received so far". It said the bid to came in response to "dozens of petitions from all over Spain".

They have offered an unspecified amount of cash and have also attempted to negotiate through an animal exchange programme.

"The zoo also guarantees that Paul will receive the best attention, reflecting the great affection in which he is held by all the Spanish people since he predicted that the Spanish team would win the football World Cup," said Zoo spokeswoman Amparo Fernandez.

"We hope that within the next few days we will be able to confirm news that the admirable Paul will be part of the club of the most loved and charismatic animals of the Madrid Zoo.”

But a spokeswoman for Paul said he was not for sale.

"We are not in contact with Madrid Zoo. And we know nothing about swapping Paul for another animal or him going to Madrid Zoo for a transfer sum," Sea Life spokeswoman Tanja Munzig said.

In octopus terms, Paul is already a pensioner, at the grand old age of two-and-a-half. Octopuses generally live three years at most.

Paul is so popular in Spain that a northwestern Spanish town tried to borrow him.

Officials in O Caraballino, population 14,000, also declared the octopus an honorary citizen.

It mayor is due to travel to Oberhausen next week to present him with a commemorative plaque and sculpture while Paul has also been presented with a miniature World Cup trophy.

He had also become at the centre of an international bidding war, after Spanish businessmen offered 38,000 euros to bring him to Spain.

Andres Iniesta, who scored the goal which won the World Cup final for Spain, said after the game: “As for the octopus, what can I say? We won. The octopus will be very popular in Spain".

Octopus is a delicacy in restaurants throughout Spain, but Mrs Fernandez insisted there was no way Paul would end up being served up on a restaurant plate if he is moved to the Madrid Zoo.

The art of match predicting became a dangerous job for the clairvoyant cephalopod with bitter fans sending death-threat emails to his German aquarium, saying "we want Paul for the pan”.

Jose Luiz Rodriguez Zapatero, the Spanish Prime Minister, even jokingly suggested sending in a squad of octopus bodyguards.

Some people, however, won up to half a million pounds between them during the tournament by placing bets based on the octopus's predictions.

Paul the Octopus : Psychic Octopus Gets Spanish Citizenship

Psychic Octopus Gets Spanish Citizenship

Paul the octopus, who rose to fame with his flawless predictions for the 2010 World Cup, has been made an honorary citizen of Spain.

Since he displayed 100 percent accuracy in predicting the winners in the tournament, offers to take the animal have been coming in daily from betting offices and zoos.

The Madrid Zoo has offered to buy Paul to ensure that he spends his years in Spain. The octopod successfully predicted Spain's win over his home team Germany in the semifinals, as well as its win over the Netherlands in the final.

Spain's last attempt at bringing Paul over from his home in Germany's Sea Life aquarium was an offer for an animal exchange, but it was turned down.

The country's next move was to offer Paul honorary Spanish citizenship. The mayor of a small Spanish city will visit Germany to award him a badge and a sculpture.

Henry looks to rebound with Red Bulls

Ian Begley
ESPNNewYork.com

HARRISON, N.J. -- Thierry Henry isn't looking at his tenure with the Red Bulls as a prolonged retirement tour.

Henry, who will turn 33 in August, is instead looking to put a disappointing year of soccer in his rear-view mirror and help lift the Red Bulls to their first MLS title in 14 years.

"I can assure you that I came here to try to win, that is the most important thing," Henry said at a Thursday afternoon news conference at Red Bulls Arena. "I am a competitor."

Henry was asked to assess where he is as a player, nearly a month removed from a subpar showing at the World Cup and two weeks after being released by FC Barcelona, his club team. He decided instead to focus on the present.

Henry We're not here to compete. We're here to make football better.
” -- Thierry Henry, on comparisons between him and David Beckham

"[I'm] right here with the New York Red Bulls trying to win a title," Henry said. "I'm just looking forward to coming here and representing the New York Red Bulls."

Henry, who earlier in the day announced his retirement from the French national team, signed a 4½-year deal to play in Harrison.

The former World Cup champion is coming off a disappointing season with FC Barcelona. He scored just four goals for the team last season and fell out of the starting lineup. He was released by Barcelona last month. Henry said on Thursday that he played for four months with a nagging knee injury.

"I didn't recover well from it. I suffered," he said.

He was a reserve on the French team which was engulfed in controversy in the form of a player revolt and failed to make it out of the first round of the World Cup in South Africa.

So Henry is looking for a fresh start of sorts in Harrison. He will play his first game for the Red Bulls on July 22 against Tottenham Hotspur, in the Barclays New York Challenge at Red Bull Arena. Coach Hans Backe expects him to play 45 minutes in that match.

Backe said Henry will team with star forward Juan Pablo Angel on the front line for the Bulls, who are 8-5-2 and in second place in the Eastern Conference. Angel and Henry have the potential to form the top-scoring tandem in the league.

"He is definitely hungry," Backe said of Henry. "He will lift our game [and] he will lift our players."

Henry, who said he will live in the area, hesitated to compare his arrival to MLS with that of David Beckham, who joined the Los Angeles Galaxy with great fanfare in 2007 but did little to help the franchise on the pitch.

"We're not here to compete," he said of Beckham. "We're here to make football better."

There's little doubt that Henry, in name recognition, is one of the biggest soccer stars to play in the New York market since Pele joined the Cosmos in 1975. MLS commissioner Don Garber called Henry's arrival "a very historic day for soccer in America."

The commissioner believes the former Arsenal star gives the Red Bulls a chance to gain a stronger share of the saturated local sports market.

"Our expectations are high that Thierry will help us break through some of the clutter in the New York market," Garber said.

But Henry wasn't interested in quantifying his impact on ticket sales for the Red Bulls or the game's popularity in the Big Apple.

"I know people are going to mention me as the guy who changed soccer, but I am just the next guy coming," Henry said.

He's been seriously considering playing in the MLS for "five months" and said that joining the Red Bulls was "a dream come true."

"Finally I am here," Henry said. "I hope you can enjoy my game and let's hope we can enjoy a title also."

The Red Bull Air Race will be in New York City June 19 and June 20, 2010

I have been a fan of Air Racing and it is coming to my neigborhood. I have a feeling this event will be in a large scale and the whole world will be watching. Im talking about millions of viewers will be tuning in through their television and it is so much better to watch the event unfolding live in New York. I would say that this will be the biggest of all the Red Bull air races because New York has the beauty with its cosmopolitan landscape to host an exciting event.

This year marks the sixth year of the Red Bull Air Race World Championship which will also land in nine cities including Abu Dhabi, UAE; Perth, Australia, and Lisbon, Portugal.

Tips for using laptops. Laptop sales are going up. Improper posture can hurt neck ,back and wrist. Proper laptop set up.

Laptop Ergonomics

Laptop computers were once used mainly as secondary computers; for travelers who couldn’t get to the office or students to take to the library. Not so anymore. More and more laptops are becoming the primary working computer and most of the time laptops are designed with portability, not good ergonomics in mind.

Computer users who use a laptop on a frequent basis must usually compromise either wrist posture or neck posture. Normally, with a desktop computer, the top of the monitor is positioned around eye level, and the keyboard is placed at about the same level as the elbows. With laptops however, the keyboard and the monitor are attached, so the positions cannot be adjusted independently. The result is that comfort must be compromised. Placing the laptop at a low enough level for a comfortable arm position means that the neck is tilted forward to view the screen; raising the screen to an acceptable level means that the hands are too high. Looking down at the monitor or bending forward for long periods of time can cause neck and shoulder pain.

Person using a laptop

A chair that is too low or a table that is too high can cause poor wrist posture or contact stress between the wrist and the surface edge. This can lead to hand and wrist problems. Laptop users also tend to use their laptops wherever they are—in bed, on the dining room table, on the floor—locations that generally don’t promote good working postures, especially for the neck and back.

A few simple improvements can greatly improve comfort and reduce the chance of injury while working at a laptop computer.

* When using a laptop as your primary computer use an external keyboard, mouse and ideally, an external monitor. This way you can attain an ideal working posture. At the very least, use an external keyboard and mouse and follow the next point for raising the laptop.
* Raise the laptop up off the work surface so that the top of the viewing screen is at approximately eye level. There are many different types of laptop risers available; if possible the riser should be height adjustable to ensure a correct height and accommodate different users. If no riser is available, the laptop can be placed on top of books or a box (just make sure the fan can adequately cool the laptop).
* Take frequent breaks and change postures frequently. Mini-breaks—as short as 10 seconds—are recommended throughout the day. Research has found that short, frequent breaks are actually more beneficial than longer, more infrequent beaks.
* Use a document holder to get documents off of the desk surface.
* Sit in an adjustable chair with good back support. Ensure that your workstation is adjusted so that your wrists and hands are in line with your forearms and not resting on the edge of your laptop.
* When transporting your laptop, use a rolling laptop bag versus carrying it over long distances or a backpack with well padded straps to distribute the weight evenly across your shoulders.

Manny Pacquiao and Tim Lincecum: The 2 highest paid athletes right now.

Tim Lincecum and the San Francisco Giants agreed deal is worth $23 million over two years. When the two sides exchanged figures last month, Lincecum asked for $13 million while the Giants offered $8 million.

NBCSports.com is reporting that the first year is for $9.5-10 million, which would make the second year worth closer to the $13 million Lincecum wanted for the upcoming season (SI.com is now reporting that the deal is for $8 million in 2010, $13 million in 2011, and with a $1 million signing bonus for each year).

While that means Lincecum is pulling in an unprecedented salary for a player with less than three full years of experience in the majors, it looks like the Giants have come pretty close to hitting their price points for a player tha has won back-to-back Cy Young Awards in his two full big-league seasons.

It's hard to put a price on that kind of production from such a young player. And while Lincecum might not be getting quite the money he wants, if he keeps pitching at an elite level for these two seasons, then we get to do this all over again in 2012.

A lot of people thinks he can get more money and just make a deal for one year instead of 2 years. There are alson athletes who shine in their first 2 years and then later on fade but I doubt this will be Tim bacause his arms are perfect. I have a feeling that Tim will eventually end up with the Yankees you have deep pockets because Tim will end up asking for more in the future because his performance will get better and better which can command more money.

Tim Lincecum: The best filipino athletes in baseball right now. What is tim lincecum's ethnicity?

Theres no doubt he is white. The correct answer is Tim Lincecum is white and Filipino. I like him cause he loves his Filipino side.

Tim is 5'11" and 172-pounds. He is 25 years old. Tim Lincecum is a starting pitcher for the San Francisco Giants and he has been absolutely dominant since he first made his debut in May of 2007. He is the first pitcher in Major League Baseball history to win the prestigious Cy Young Award in each of his first two full seasons. He is also the only pitcher to strike out more than 260 hitters in each of those two seasons, and his competition isn't even close.

And Becky Asis, his mother.

A second-generation Filipino-American, Becky is one of Balleriano and Philomena Asis' 10 children—eight girls, and two boys.

Their father Balleriano was born in Honolulu, HI and his father, Genaro Asis was born in Mindanao, Philippines; his mother, Alberta Alcoy was born in Cebu City, Philippines.

Their mother Philomena was born in Stockton, CA and her father, Leoncio Marcigan was born in Batangas, Philippines; her mother, Anustasia Dominguez was born in Siquijor, Philippines.

Outside of baseball, Lincecum is a homebody and a family man. He has two nephews who "love to play ball with their Uncle Tim," and dozens of cousins. He also was extremely close to Balleriano who passed away in August of 2007, and it showed on the field.

Just days after his passing, Lincecum had to pitch against the Chicago Cubs. Through the first eight innings of the game he was his usual dominant self, but in the ninth inning everything came crashing down.

Tim Lincecum in action. The 2008 & 2009 NL Cy Young Award winner.

Manny Pacquiao and Tim Lincecum: The 2 best filipino athletes right now.

To me baseball is life. When i was growing up, I played baseball, softball and stickball. I was a crazy kid growing up so they give me a cathing position which i get bruises when on the chest, legs, arms and etc because sometimes you can just cant predect and catch the ball. To lazy to go to the park, we play on the streets. I have broken a few glass windows with a baseball in the neighborhood and i have gotten in trouble with somebodys mother because i told this kid her mom was a whore and she told her mother. So her mom summoned me and i had to make some excuse to get off the case.

Growing up, I love the New York Mets and the Yankees. I idolize Darryl Strawberry, Dwight Gooden, Don Mattingly and etc. There were a lot of Latino baseball superstar and maybe one filipino baseball superball which is as rare as a fish in a contaminated river but nothing as great as the San Francisco Giants Tim Lincecum. He is the 2008 & 2009 NL Cy Young Tim Lincecum. Thats back to back awards yo know how difficult that is yo all. Now I have a reason to enjoy baseball more. Although he is not purebloodied Filipino. Ill like the guy and draft him in my minds team. Also in his family tree he had somebody from my hometown of Cebu. So Tim Lincecum is my new favorate baseball player.

How to reduce tax if you win the Lottery .(reduce your estate tax.) Gift the money to your sons, daughters and grandchildren

You don't say how large your estate is, but unless it is over $3,500,000 or you plan on gifting more than a million dollars, I would just give your son the money and file the form 709. You would owe no gift tax and your son would not have to report it as income. A problem could develop, if say for instance, your friend who may not have an estate problem now, wins the lottery or inherits money. Both instances are probably unlikely, but if it happened your friend might have to suddenly account for the gifts he made in the past. I doubt if would paper trail back to you, but why take the chance. If you are married you can each give a $13,000 gift, or give him $13,000 now and $13,000 January 1st. You could give him $500,000 if you wanted to. All that would happen is you would file form 709 and show you used $487,000 of you lifetime gift allowance. Again you would pay no gift tax and you would have reduced the value of your estate by $500,000.

2010 Gift Tax Annual Exclusion to Remain at $13,000

In the United States, every person that dies with more than a certain amount is charged a “death tax” on the excess if the money goes to anyone besides their spouse. Currently, the limit is $3,500,000 per person.

To keep people from avoiding estate taxation by giving away all their money right before they die, the IRS also puts limits on the amount you can gift in any one year to any one person, as well as a cumulative limit over their lifetime for gifts that exceed the annual exemption amount.

In 2009, this annual gift exclusion is $13,000 per recipient, per year. The lifetime gift limit is $1,000,000. Anything you give in excess to $13,000 per recipient, per year is essentially subtracted from the lifetime limit of $1,000,000. This simultaneously reduces the amount the can be transferred tax-free at death.

The Internal Revenue Service announced in late October that the annual gift tax exclusion for 2010 will be $13,000, the same as in 2009. The annual exclusion allows every individual to give $13,000 to each family member or other beneficiary without any transfer tax implications. If only one spouse makes a gift to an individual, the donor and his or her spouse can elect to treat a gift to an individual as though each spouse made one-half of the gift to the individual, effectively allowing a married individual to double the benefit of the annual exclusion to $26,000 if the non-donor spouse makes no annual exclusion gifts to the done in the same calendar year.

Now let’s suppose you give a gift of $14,000 instead of $13,000. This is not a problem for you or your son, except you exceeded the annual exclusion by $1,000. You would need to file form 709, but you will not owe any gift tax. You are allowed to give $1,000,000 lifetime over the annual exclusion of $13,000 per year. So in this case, your $1,000,000 lifetime gift tax exclusion will be reduced to $999,000.

Given the above, the potential estate tax savings offered by the annual gift tax exclusion can be substantial. For example, suppose a mother and father with a large estate have two married children and four grandchildren. Mother and father could transfer $26,000 to each child and grandchild ($156,000 annually) without gift taxes. After five years, the gifting will have reduced mother and father’s combined estate by $780,000

What Can I Do if I Miss Paying My Life Insurance Premium?

Life insurance or life assurance is a contract between the policy owner and the insurer, where the insurer agrees to pay a designated beneficiary a sum of money upon the occurrence of the insured individual's or individuals' death or other event, such as terminal illness or critical illness. In return, the policy owner agrees to pay a stipulated amount called a premium at regular intervals or in lump sums. There may be designs in some countries where bills and death expenses plus catering for after funeral expenses should be included in Policy Premium. In the United States, the predominant form simply specifies a lump sum to be paid on the insured's demise.

We all buy life insurance
to protect the people we love after we're gone. To maintain our coverage we must, of course, pay for our policies. Most people make monthly premium payments.

However, with the unemployment rolls increasing, more and more people miss an occasional payment. This article looks at how you can fix this problem.

If you miss paying any premiums your insurer will contact you and advise you that they haven't received your payment. They do this because it could be a banking error or a simple oversight on your part.

They'll also tell you that unless you pay your premium within a set amount of time - your grace period - they will automatically cancel your policy.

Pay Your Premium within the Grace Period

If you miss a life insurance payment most companies have a thirty to thirty-one day grace period within which you can make your payment and not suffer any negative consequences whatsoever. Even if you die within this grace period your beneficiaries will collect the death benefits. However whatever premium is due will first be deducted.

The bad news is that if the grace period ends and you still haven't made your premium payment your life insurance policy will lapse. Some life insurance companies will permit you to reinstate your lapsed policy within certain timeframes. However you will first have to prove that you are insurable, pay off any outstanding loans you might have against your policy, and pay them all of your overdue premiums plus whatever interest has accrued.

And if you are accepted your premium will probably be higher because you will be older. In addition, if your health has substantially deteriorated your premium may be considerable higher. If the situation is extreme you might be uninsurable.

A Possible Solution - Have Your Payment Withdrawn From Your Cash Value

1) You may be able to protect yourself against your policy lapsing if you own a cash value policy. With your authorization your insurance company can withdraw money from your insurance policy's cash value to take care of your payments. Keep in mind, though, that this will only keep your policy active if you have cash value.

An Additional Solution - Protect Yourself When You Buy Your Life Insurance Policy

2) If you want to preclude the possibility of losing your life insurance coverage you may be able to add a
"Waiver of Premium"
option to your policy. If you have this waiver and become unemployed or cannot work temporarily because of an accident or illness your insurer will take over the payments until you return to work once you have contacted them and informed them of the situation.

A Cherry A Day Can Keep Diabetes Away. Can increase insulin production by fifty percent.

A Cherry A Day Can Keep Diabetes Away
Can increase insulin production by fifty percent.

Cherries may one day be part of diabetes treatment. The sweet and tart versions of the fruit contain chemicals that boost insulin, which helps control blood sugar levels.

The chemicals are called anthocyanins. They occur naturally in cherries, giving them their bright red color. Anthocyanins also tint other fruits, vegetables, and flowers with bright reds, blues, and purples. Fruit containing the chemicals has shown promise in reducing heart disease risk.

The same might also be true for diabetes. Michigan State University researchers recently isolated several anthocyanins from cherries, testing them on insulin-producing pancreatic cells taken from rodents.

The cells pumped up their insulin production by 50% when exposed to the anthocyanins. In one case, insulin production nearly doubled when exposed to the most active anthocyanin.

That's promising, but anthocyanins need to be tested on animals and humans before they're recommended for diabetes treatment. "We're excited with the laboratory results so far, but more studies are needed," says researcher Muralee Nair, PhD, in a news release.

More than just cherries are loaded with anthocyanins. The chemicals are also found in red grapes, strawberries, blueberries, vegetables, and wine, cider, and tea. However, the biggest insulin effects seem to come from the type of anthocyanins found in cherries.

One day, anthocyanins might be the building block for new diabetes treatments. Meanwhile, don't rely on cherries to control insulin problems. But since anthocyanins aren't toxic to humans, there's no harm in eating cherries as part of a healthy diet.

Gout is an extremely painful form of arthritis caused by a buildup of uric acid in the system

Gout is an extremely painful form of arthritis caused by a buildup of uric acid in the system. It's most common in overweight men over age 40. Losing weight, eating right, reducing the amount of alcohol in your diet and drinking plenty of water help reduce uric acid levels, decreasing the frequency and intensity of flare-ups. The recommended diet for gout is low in purine-rich foods (purine is a protein byproduct) and high in anti-inflammatory foods, such as omega-3 fats, berries and cherries.
Uric Acid Metabolism

Uric acid is a normal part of metabolism, made by our bodies when purines are broken down (a byproduct of protein foods). Usually, uric acid is dissolved in the blood, filtered by the kidneys and excreted from the body through urine. Those suffering from gout either produce too much uric acid or are unable to efficiently excrete it. Over time, uric acid condenses and forms sharp crystals around joints, resulting in inflammation and severe pain. Attacks come and go but may last for weeks. Deposits of these crystals (tolphi) build up around joints and cartilage, increasing in size over time. Long-term results may be crippled joints and the development of uric acid kidney stones. Drug therapy and lifestyle modifications are beneficial for decreasing attacks.
Control Your Weight

Obese people have higher levels of uric acid in the bloodstream. Thus, staying in a healthy weight range offers protection against gout. Interestingly, even a slight weight gain (six to 10 lbs.) in early adulthood increases the risk of developing gout. Those who are able to control their weight typically eat a calorie-controlled diet that's low in total and saturated fats.
Avoid Purine-Rich Foods

Eliminate foods that are high in purines. These are typically protein-rich foods, but there are other foods and beverages that contain significant amounts of purines. Doing this helps prevent severe symptoms and may enhance the effectiveness of drug therapy. Foods to be avoided on a low-purine diet include: organ meats (liver, kidney and sweetbreads), sardines, anchovies, mackerel, canned fish, mussels, beef, pork roast, chocolate, beer, red wine and beans. Foods that offer a moderate amount of purines (eat less of these foods) include: peas, legumes, oatmeal, spinach, asparagus, mushrooms and luncheon meats.
Beverages

Drink alcohol in moderation. It can worsen gout in two ways. Alcohol increases the body's production of uric acid, and it impairs the kidney's ability to excrete the uric acid. Heavy red wines have the highest purine content. Drinking water, on the other hand, helps flush the kidneys and dilutes the uric acid in the bloodstream. Juices count as well. Aim for at least 10 cups daily. If you want to drink juice, choose black or tart cherry juice and/or pomegranate juice. Both of these contain phytonutrients (disease-fighting plant compounds) that are anti-inflammatory. Water them down to decrease sugar content. Try drinking non-fat milk as well. Non-fat milk (and low-fat yogurt) have health benefits that include decreasing elevated uric acid levels in the bloodstream.
Eat More Anti-Inflammatory Foods

Consume healthy fats, especially omega-3 fats, in moderation. This essential fatty acid has anti-inflammatory benefits. Choose vegan sources of omega-3 fats such as walnuts, flaxseeds, and flax and canola oil. Cherries and other dark red/blue berries are rich in compounds that protect collagen from being destroyed (an effect of gout). These berries contain an antioxidant flavonoid chemical group known as anthocyanins (that give them their bluish-red hue). Anthocyanins fight inflammation, characteristic of any type of arthritis. Tart cherries are also rich in one powerful antioxidant known as quercetin. Quercetin acts as an anti-inflammatory agent as well. Eating blueberries, strawberries and especially cherries daily may alleviate pain because of their powerful anti-inflammatory properties.

What Should You Eat?

Dietary restrictions suggest what people should not eat, but what should people eat? What foods will help control gout attacks? The American Medical Association recommends the following dietary guidelines for people with gout, advising them to eat a diet:

* high in complex carbohydrates (fiber-rich whole grains, fruits, and vegetables)

* low in protein (15% of calories and sources should be soy, lean meats, or poultry)

* no more than 30% of calories in fat (with only 10% animal fats)

Recommended Foods To Eat

* Fresh cherries, strawberries, blueberries, and other red-blue berries
* Bananas
* Celery
* Tomatoes
* Vegetables including kale, cabbage, parsley, green-leafy vegetables
* Foods high in bromelain (pineapple)
* Foods high in vitamin C (red cabbage, red bell peppers, tangerines, mandarins, oranges, potatoes)

* Chocolate, cocoa
* Coffee, tea
* Carbonated beverages
* Essential fatty acids (tuna and salmon, flaxseed, nuts, seeds)
* Tofu, although a legume and made from soybeans, may be a better choice than meat

Foods considered moderately high in purines but which may not raise the risk of gout include: asparagus, cauliflower, mushrooms, peas, spinach, whole grain breads and cereals, chicken, duck, ham, turkey, kidney and lima beans. It is important to remember that purines are found in all protein foods. All sources of purines should not be eliminated.

• Simple sugars, simple carbohydrates and saturated fats - they increase your body's production of uric acid and impair your kidneys' ability to get rid of it. Eliminate fructose (found in food and drinks, like sodas)
• White flour
• Aspirin can raise uric acid levels. If you need to use pain killers, only use ones with ibuprofen.
• Oatmeal
• Whole grains
• Caffeine - it impairs kidney function, which is needed to get uric acid out of the body.

Prevention

• One of the best ways to prevent gout is to drink at least 6-8 eight ounce glasses of water, fresh juices or herb tea daily, especially at the first signs of gout. This will keep your urine diluted and will help your body excrete uric acid and prevent crystals from forming.
* Eat foods high in potassium, as mentioned above.
• Eating generous amounts of other fruits and vegetables helps keep uric acid crystals in solution.
• Take the flavonoid quercetin - see below under Folk Remedies. This should be part of your permanent gout-prevention diet.
• Lemon juice prevents gout attacks by stimulating the formation of calcium carbonate in the body. Calcium carbonate neutralizes acids in the body, including uric acid that triggers gout attacks. After each meal drink the juice of one freshly squeezed lemon in a glass of lukewarm water. To get more juice out of the lemon, bring it to room temperature, then roll it around on the counter with the palm of your hand.
• Taking 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda with meals will prevent gout attacks. This will help alkalize the body.
• Keep the leg elevated.
• A high fiber diet also aids in the elimination of uric acid by absorbing bile acids formed in the liver. These bile acids can act as a precursor to uric acid.

Supplements

Low-purine diets are low in vitamins B, E and other antioxidants, so supplementation will be necessary to prevent damage from free radicals that can intensify gouty problems.

B complex One to three 50 mg tablets of the complete B complex daily, plus 500 mg of pantothenic acid (B5) in divided doses to assist the body's conversion of uric acid into harmless compounds.

Bromelain 500 mg twice daily as an anti-inflammatory.

Fish oil Take 2 grams of fish oil capsules 2x a day to reduce the chances of gouty inflammation.

L-glutamine 500 mg four times daily on an empty stomach - is an antacid.

L-glutathione 500 mg twice daily on an empty stomach - increases renal cleansing of uric acid.

L-glycine 500 mg four times daily between meals - acts as an antacid.

L-methionine 250 mg twice daily on an empty stomach - detoxifies purines.

Magnesium citrate 400 mg three times a day - an antispasmodic to relieve pain.

Shark cartilage used on a daily basis of 3-6 capsules/day can make the pain disappear and allow you to eat previously forbidden foods within one week without experiencing pain in the affected joint. After approximately one month of continuous use, you may stop taking the cartilage until the pain reoccurs. At this point you will probably only need to take the cartilage (3-6 capsules) for a week or two. You may continue this on/off cycle as needed. Your uric acid level may return to normal, but even if it doesn't, the pain will go away.

Tissue salts To prevent the formation of uric acid crystals, take two tablets of 6X Silicea three times a day. During a gout attack, increase the dosage to three tablets and add an equal amount of Nat. Phos. and Nat. Sulph.

Vitamin C 1,000 mg per hour at the very outset of a gout attack, then reduce to 500-3,000 mg daily for maintenance. Vitamin C helps lower serum uric acid levels.

Vitamin E Low-purine diets are low in vitamin E and fried foods deplete it, so supplementation will be necessary as a deficiency can contribute to the formation of excess uric acid. Begin with 100 IU of natural vitamin E, and slowly increase to 6-800 IU daily.

Acupressure

• Press just below the center of the nose toward the upper lip.

• Press and massage between the ball of the foot and the bottom of the big toe on each foot; then on the left foot only, stimulate a point halfway between the base of the little toe and the heel pad.

• Press inward and upward on the underside of the protuberance at the base of the skull.

• On both hands, press and massage a point on the inside of the pad at the base of the thumb directly beneath the index finger; then on the left palm only, stimulate a point halfway between the base of the little finger and the wrist.

Remedies
Folk

Alfalfa is a good source of minerals and other nutrients that help reduce serum uric acid.

Apple cider vinegar (ACV) Add some rose hips to vinegar and boil; dab on affected area. You may need to apply this mixture several times a day for a few weeks. The vinegar changes the blood pH so that the crystals will go into solution and be excreted.

• Mix two teaspoons each of apple cider vinegar and raw honey in a glass of water and drink at mealtime.

• Soak the foot in a mixture of 1/2 cup of ACV and three cups of hot water.

Bilberry is high in anthocyanosides and flavonoids, which are helpful in overcoming gout.

Black cherry juice Get some natural, concentrated black cherry juice and drink several tablespoons of the concentrate daily. You should expect relief in 48 hours.

Black cohash moderates blood acidity.

Blueberries are high in anti-inflammatory compounds called anthocyanins, which help ease the pain of gout.

Buchu tea helps dissolve and flush out uric acid crystals.

Castor oil packs Soak a piece of white flannel in warm castor oil, wring it out and place over the affected area; cover with plastic wrap and apply a heating pad. Do this for one hour twice daily.

Cayenne pepper Boil one tablespoon of pepper in 1 cup of vinegar and 1 cup of water and dab onto the painful joint.

• Mix cayenne with enough wintergreen oil to make a paste and apply to the affected area.

Celery seeds These seeds are quite effective in relieving gout by eliminating uric acid from the body. According to James Duke, Ph.D., a medical botanist formerly with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, celery seeds contain about twenty different anti-inflammatory agents. Although there is little scientific research on celery seeds, according to Kerry Bone, a leading expert on herbal remedies in Australia, "it (sic) works brilliantly in patients." Recommended dosage is 500 mg (standardized to 450 mg of celery seed extract) 2x daily. Note: This remedy is not to be used by pregnant women because of its diuretic effect and the fact that it can encourage uterine contractions, or those with kidney disease because of its potential diuretic effect and that the plant's oils can worsen kidney inflammation.

• Cook a tablespoon of celery seeds in two cups of water until they are soft; strain and drink 1/2 cup four times a day.

Charcoal Take 1/2 -1 teaspoon of activated charcoal daily.

• Make a poultice using 1/2 cup of activated charcoal, 3 tablespoons of ground flaxseed and warm water to draw out the toxins.

Cherries If you are lucky enough to have fresh cherries, eating 6-8 cherries daily will relieve the symptoms of gout. This remedy was reported in 1950 by Dr. Ludwig W. Blau who cured his own gout. Frozen and canned cherries may also be used. When you feel an attack coming on, eat 20-30 cherries immediately. Cherries are rich in compounds that prevent the destruction of collagen, which the body uses to form connective tissue. The connective tissue is damaged by gout. Cherries also have an enzyme that neutralizes uric acid and are high in anthocyanins which have high antioxidant properties as well as anti-inflammatory action. For greatest effectiveness eat them between meals.

Devil's claw reduces uric acid levels and is a natural cleansing agent for toxic impurities. Take 400 mg of the dried extract 3x a day for as long as desired.

DMSO (dimethylsulfoxide) is very effective in relieving pain and swelling caused by inflammation. It helps dissolve crystalline deposits.

Garlic Eat several cloves of raw garlic daily. Mince the garlic and add it to black cherry juice for a potent remedy.

Ginger Put 1/3 cup of ground ginger (buy in bulk to keep the cost down) in a bathtub of water and soak for 30 minutes. This will cause you to sweat (a good thing) which will help eliminate the uric acid from your tissues. When you are finished the bath be sure to rinse off thoroughly, as the ginger can cause skin irritation if it dries on your skin.

Grapes are high in alkalines which lessen the acidity of uric acid and aid in its elimination from the body.

Hawthorn is high in anthocyanosides and flavonoids, which are helpful in overcoming gout.

Hydrangea is an anti-inflammatory.

Ice Apply an ice pack for ten minutes, then alternate with a moist hot-towel compress, to soothe and numb the pain.

Mullein Soak mullein leaves in a hot vinegar/water mixture. Pack the leaves on the affected area.

Nettle contains alkaloids which neutralize uric acid.

Parsley acts as a natural diuretic.

Quercetin The flavonoid quercetin inhibits uric acid production in a similar fashion to commonly prescribed drugs for gout. Take 1000 mg of quercetin along with 1,000-1,500 mg of the enzyme bromelain (to enhance absorption) two to three times daily between meals. Bromelain also help reduce the inflammation.

Red clover has traditionally been one of the standard remedies for gout, as well as removing toxins from the body, and treating psoriasis, eczema, and hot flashes. Studies have shown that red clover may thin the blood, so it should not be used by patients who are also taking an anticoagulant medication. While red clover is high in isoflavones, the reason it is helpful in treating gout has not been studied.

Saffron neutralizes uric acid buildup.

Spearmint Make a poultice of spearmint leaves and wrap the affected area.

Strawberries Eating a cup of strawberries with each meal should bring quick relief. They neutralize uric acid.

Yarrow Make a tea by using equal parts of yarrow and stinging nettles; strain, cool and drink several cups a day.
